Gov Babagana Zulum of Borno has emphasised the need for prudent financial management, investment in revenue-generating projects and stricter accountability for public officials.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Tuesday at the Council Chambers of the Government House, Zulum called for reduction in government spending, particularly overhead costs.
He also advocated for savings and investments that would yield long term benefits for the state.
“We must focus on projects that will generate revenue for the government and improve the lives of the people of Borno State,” he said.
The governor emphasised the key steps his administration had taken to enhance workers’ welfare, which he described as central to the state’s 25-year Development Framework and 10-year Strategic Transformation Plan.
“Among these measures is the approval of the minimum wage for civil servants, aimed at cushioning the economic hardship brought about by the removal of fuel subsidies.
“We remain committed to the welfare and well-being of our citizens. We will continue to listen to your concerns and address your needs as prioritised during our campaigns,” he said.
Zulum described the state mass transit system as a critical intervention, while acknowledging the challenges posed by the removal of subsidies and a declining exchange rate.
He noted that without the existing fleet, residents of the state, particularly Maiduguri, the state capital, would be facing severe transportation difficulties.
The governor announced plans to expand the fleet to better serve the public further and ease the burden faced by the citizens.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zulum also addressed issues of absenteeism and accountability among local government officials.
He said that several secretaries and treasurers from Ngala Local Government Area had been recalled for failing to be at their duty posts.
“It is unacceptable for commissioners or local government officials to leave their stations without prior approval. Charity begins at home, and we must set a good example for others to follow,” he stated.
The governor instructed commissioners to prioritise their duties and ensure transparency by liaising with the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) before leaving their duty posts.
He emphasised the importance of leading by example and fostering a culture of accountability across all levels of government.
“We serve together, but there must be rules. Governance requires discipline, and we must show leadership by example,” he said. (NAN)
