The Zamfara Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended President Bola Tinubu for assenting the bill for the establishment of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC).
The State APC Chairman, Alhaji Tukur Danfulani, made the commendation in Gusau on Saturday at a two-day awareness campaign on the creation of the commission.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by a political group, ‘Northern Nigeria APC Media Network”, in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Barau Jibrin.
Danfulani, represented by the State APC Secretary, Ibrahim Umar-Dangaladima, described the move as timely, saying,”it is a welcome development considering how banditry has affected the region especially Zamfara.
“The North-West region of Nigeria faces severe socio-economic challenges, including infrastructural decay, poverty, youth unemployment, insecurity, and inequality.
“The effects of insecurity to our region especially almost all the communities in Zamfara have resulted in significant challenges to human and economic future development,” Umar-Dangaladima added.
Also speaking, the Director- General, New Media in the office of the Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Bashir Yusuf, said the establishment of the NWDC would bring the much-needed development to the region and the country.
Yusuf said: “Sen. Barau Jibrin has initiated and sponsored the bill for the North-West Development Commission (NWDC) aimed at ensuring the future development of the region.
“The commission will improve educational standards, provide employment opportunities, create jobs, and bring about various forms of development.
“I believe in the next few months, the NWDC will start showing its impact when it fully takes off in the region.
“I believe the bill seeks to provide for the establishment of the North-West Development Commission to act as a catalyst for developing the array of potentials in the region and addressing the gap in infrastructural development in the region.”
The Director of Research, Planning and Strategy of the network, Bashir Muhammad, presented a paper titled “Role of the North West Development Commission as a Panacea to the Region’s Problems”.
Bashir also described the establishment of the commission as a necessity.
He said that the commission was set up to facilitate the reconstruction of roads, houses, and business premises destroyed by multidimensional crises.
Bashir added, ”The commission will also tackle poverty, literacy levels, ecological problems, and other related environmental or development challenges in North-West states.
“The North-West region will significantly contribute to Nigeria’s development, particularly in agriculture.
“What the region needs is support from the federal government to develop its teeming youth, infrastructure, agriculture, and more to grow on par with other zones.”
The event was attended by the traditional rulers, politicians, women and youths groups and people with special needs, among others.(NAN)
