A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, on Wednesday dragged her husband, Usman Shuaibu, before a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, over alleged neglect and inadequate provision for the family.
Bello, who communicated through sign language interpreted by one Aisha Sulaiman, told the court that her husband gives her only N50 for food, leaving her and their child to starve.
“We got married in 2016, and at the beginning, it was my parents who provided food for us. The problem started when that food ran out,” she said.
She accused her husband, a tailor by profession, of failing in his responsibilities as a provider, stating that he could not even pay her hospital bill when she gave birth—an obligation later fulfilled by his mother.
Bello added that both families had previously intervened and urged Shuaibu to support his household, but to no avail. She therefore prayed the court to dissolve the marriage.
In his response, Shuaibu denied all the allegations made by his wife.
Presiding Judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, adjourned the case and ordered both parties to return to court with their parents or guardians on August 25.
