A woman in Ilorin has petitioned a local Area Court to dissolve her marriage, citing what she described as her husband’s consistent irresponsibility and failure to provide for their household.
The petitioner, Sherifat Bamidele, appeared before the Centre-Igboro Area Court on Wednesday, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Suleiman Popoola. The marriage, she said, was conducted according to Islamic rites in March 2024.
Bamidele accused Popoola of failing to support her financially, revealing that she bears the full cost of running their home. She also stated that she has been solely responsible for the care and upbringing of her child from a previous relationship.
“I cover all the household expenses, including rent, food, and maintenance. He does nothing. I am exhausted and want out of this marriage,” she told the court.
The presiding judge, Mr Toyin Aluko, scheduled the next hearing for 12 August to consider the matter further.
