The chairperson of Nigeria Cassava Growers Association, Kano State chapter, Halima Zubairu Danbatta, has asserted that boosting cassava production is essential for economic development of the nation.
Danbatta, who made the assertion in an interview with journalists after visiting cassava seedlings banks in Gwarzo local government area of the state, said a lot of products can be made from cassava which could revitalise the economy of the country.
According to her, cassava farming can provide income and job to the teeming citizens, encouraging women to engage in cassava production.
“Cassava production can be a game-changer for our economy, and the youths and women. If our youth and women can fully engage in cassava production, it will not only boost our economy but also take them out of restiveness”, she opined.
She called on the government to support cassava farmers by providing soft loans and modern equipment to enhance productivity.
“We need the government’s support to take our cassava production to the next level. With the right tools and resources, we can increase our yield and improve the quality of our cassava products”, she said.
Danbatta while emphasising the importance of women engaging in cassava production noted that since women are known for their role in raising children, engaging in cassava production which “is profitable and marketable” can empower them to take care of their children, thereby reducing poverty, hunger and ensuring food security.
“Women are the backbone of our society, and their involvement in cassava production is essential for our food security. We need to encourage more women to get involved in cassava production and provide them with the necessary support and resources”, she advocated.
