The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has charged students sitting for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the state to avoid malpractice.
The Commissioner, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
NAN reports that 2025 WASSCE began on April 24 and will end on June 20, while the Secondary School Certificate Examination, organised by the National Examination Council, is billed to start from June 16 and end on July 25.
Alli-Balogun noted that the Lagos State Government organised Eko Learners’ Support Programme and other initiatives to strengthen students’ preparations for the examinations.
“I urge students to approach the exercise with a positive mindset, comport themselves well, avoid all forms of examination malpractice and peer influence that can implicate them or generate issues.
“We came up with more steps, including swift action to revive various school activities that tap into students’ natural learning abilities to stimulate their physical and mental well-being,” the official said.
He said that the steps included re-activation of co-curricular activities that foster holistic development in students, implementation of strategies that promote interactive learning, and incorporating hands-on activities, experiments, and projects.
“As part of our rules of engagement, principals and vice principals of all schools are mandated to teach for six and eight periods weekly as a part of our strategies to improve students performance,” he said.
The commissioner emphasised that the students underwent necessary preparatory measures to increase their chances of success, warning them against malpractice.
“We have provided an enabling environment that will lead to impressive academic outcomes and good results for our students sitting for the 2025 WASSCE and targeted to raise the standards of education Lagos State.
“The Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration is intentional about academic excellence of our students and the idea is to improve overall performance of students, especially in major examinations,” he added.
Alli-Balogun noted that the Eko Learners’ Support initiative of the state government was designed to broadcast 320 lessons in 10 different subjects including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Government and History.
He gave other subjects as Literature in English and Yoruba, adding that the lessons were being aired on Lagos Television and disseminated on social media platforms.
He said that proficient teachers were recruited for the lessons.
The commissioner added that the lessons were being prepared in accordance with the Lagos State Government-approved scheme of work and WASSCE and NECO syllabuses. (NAN)
