Fresh violence has gripped Kano city as supporters of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero clashed violently near the Kofar Kudu palace, the official residence of Emir Sanusi.
According to BBC Hausa service report on Monday evening monitored by our correspondent, the confrontation occurred when Emir Bayero’s entourage, on their way to condole the family of late Aminu Dantata, passed through the palace of Emir Sanusi, triggering attacks and counter-attacks between the two groups.
Commenting on the incident, special adviser to the governor on chieftaincy affairs, Tijjani Mohammed, claimed that thugs loyal to Emir Bayero initiated the attack in retaliation for alleged booing on the road.
However, a traditional title holder loyal to Emir Bayero, Aminu Babba Danagundi, denied these allegations, stating that their group was peaceful and was allegedly attacked first by thugs hired by Emir Sanusi’s camp who were deployed at the palace gate to stone them as they passed.
Our correspondent recalls that the emirship tussle between Emir Sanusi and Emir Bayero has been ongoing since Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated Emir Sanusi, reversing the dethronement by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Emir Bayero, who was deposed by Governor Yusuf, currently resides in the Nassarawa palace, while Emir Sanusi occupies the main palace.
The latest violence led to injuries and damage to property, with police vehicles smashed and palace guards attacked.
