The University of Jos on Wednesday matriculated 10,655 new students into various faculties for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, said that the students were selected from the 53, 912 candidates who applied to study in the university.
He maintained that the matriculants were among the candidates who applied to study in the institutions in 2023 and 2024.
The vice chancellor, who congratulated the new students, urged them to take their studies seriously and adhere to the rules and regulations of the institution.
Ishaya, who promised to uphold, protect and provide a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for students to learn, advised them to be disciplined and desist from cult activities, alcoholism, drug abuse and other social ills.
“The main objective of this matriculation exercise is to formally, officially and ceremonially admit you into the studentship of this great university.
“This is to also acquaint you with the fundamental principles, norms and culture of our institution.
“You must be fully committed to your studies to justify selection out of the thousands who wanted to come and study in this institution
“You are expected to exhibit a high sense of discipline while in the university; the university will not award its degree to students who lack character and learning,” he said.
Ishaya also explained that among those matriculated, 66 foreign students were drawn from 13 African countries.
He explained that the foreign students were sponsored by the Rochas International Foundation.
In brief remarks, Sen. Rochas Okorocha, called on the new students to take their studies seriously.
Okorocha, an alumnus of the institution, said that 311 students currently studying in the university were being sponsored by his foundation.
