UN Women, in partnership with the Small Scale Women Farmers Organisation in Nigeria (SWOFON), has distributed biogas stoves to 250 women across Bauchi and Dass Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Bauchi State.

Hajiya Marka Abass, National Public Relations Officer, SWOFON, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Bauchi.

Abass explained that the household biogas project was a dual-purpose intervention, aimed at addressing both climate change mitigation and gender equality.

She said that the initiative aligned with the UN Women’s commitment to providing clean, affordable, and sustainable cooking alternatives that reduce dependence on firewood, enhance health, and empower women economically.

She said that the distribution includes 125 for households in Bauchi LGA and another 125 for Dass LGA.

”The entire process was completed within five to six days, and all beneficiaries have already been trained on the importance, usage, and maintenance of biogas technology,” she said.

Abass also said that to theUN Women had facilitated capacity-building programmes for women and local artisans, equipping them with skills to install and maintain biogas digesters.

“This not only ensures sustainability but also opens up new income-generating opportunities within these communities,” she added.

She noted that the multiple benefits of the project include improved respiratory health due to reduced exposure to smoke from firewoods and time and cost savings for families.

“The bio-slurry byproduct can also be used for gardening, providing further economic value,” she further added.

She urged beneficiaries to use the biogas stoves responsibly and maintain them properly, warning that the stoves were not for resale but meant to uplift their standard of living.(NAN)
