Two men have died in a tragic accident in northern Nigeria after attempting to retrieve a mobile phone that fell into a pit latrine.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Bazabe village, located in Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State, according to a statement from the Kano State Fire Service.
The deceased, Usman Muhammed and Ibrahim Inuwa, both aged 40, reportedly suffocated after entering the latrine in an effort to recover the device.
According to the fire service’s public relations officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, emergency services were alerted at approximately 11:16 a.m. by a police officer, Inspector Auwalu.
“Muhammed was the first to enter the pit in a bid to retrieve his handset but became trapped,” said Abdullahi. “In an attempt to rescue him, Inuwa tied a rope around his waist and descended into the pit, but also became trapped.”
Rescue teams from the Takai Fire Station responded immediately and managed to extract the two men, who were both found unconscious. They were rushed to hospital, but doctors confirmed that both had died.
The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Office in Albasu, and local authorities are investigating.
