U.S. President Donald Trump has identified his Vice President, JD Vance, as the leading contender to emerge as the Republican presidential candidate in the 2028 election, describing him as “most likely” to succeed him.
“So it’s too early, obviously, to talk about it, but certainly he’s doing a great job, and he would be probably the favourite at this point,” Trump said during a press conference in Washington, D.C.
The event was attended by top administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Trump also hinted at the possibility of a joint ticket involving Vance and Rubio in the future.
“I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form,” he said.
“I also think we have incredible people—some of the people on the stage right here.”
Although the next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for 2028, Trump has not fully ruled out running again, despite constitutional limitations.
Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, no individual may be elected president more than twice. Trump, who served from 2017 to 2021 and is currently in his second term, would be constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.
However, in a Tuesday interview with CNBC, when asked whether he would consider another run, Trump said, “Probably not.”
