A tragic accident in Saki, Oyo State has claimed the life of a two-year-old girl who fell into a deep well on Tuesday.
According to officials from the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, the incident occurred at Orita Mokola Junction, Seedu Sabarumu in the Sango area of the town. The cause of the accident remains unclear at this time.
The Chairman of the Fire Services Agency and Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Services Reform, Dr Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The agency’s Saki Zonal Command was alerted at 1:43 p.m. by a resident identified as Mr Adewole. Fire officers, led by officer Saka, were dispatched immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, the team was informed that a young girl had been trapped in the well for an extended period.
Rescue efforts were launched swiftly, with firefighter CFM Adediran Jacob entering the well to recover the child. Sadly, she was brought out lifeless. Her body was later handed over to the police, led by CSP Odunbanjo Kehinde, for further investigation.
Dr Akinwande noted that the Fire Service’s Post Incident Investigation Team (PIIT) had begun inquiries to determine the exact cause of the accident. He also issued a public warning, urging residents to secure wells and septic tanks to prevent similar tragedies.
In a separate incident later that day, two individuals were confirmed dead following a lorry accident at Ajegede Ode-Aje in Ibadan. Akinwande said the accident occurred at around 7:34 p.m. and was caused by brake failure.
A truck loaded with frozen fish reportedly lost control and plunged into a river. The victims, believed to be the driver and his assistant, were retrieved by a rescue team led by officer ACFS Olubunmi and handed over to police officers from the Agugu division.
