President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, the late Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), describing him as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose life was marked by honour and an unshakable dedication to Nigeria’s unity.
In a statement personally signed by the President, Tinubu announced Buhari’s death earlier on Sunday in a UK hospital following a prolonged illness. The former leader was aged 82.
“With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR,” Tinubu said.
Reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, Tinubu noted that the late president led Nigeria through some of its most challenging times — first as military head of state between 1984 and 1985, and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
“He stood firm through turbulence, governed with quiet strength, deep integrity, and unwavering belief in Nigeria’s promise,” Tinubu remarked. “He confronted corruption, instilled discipline in public life, and always placed the nation above personal interest.”
The President disclosed he had spoken to Buhari’s widow, Mrs Aisha Buhari, offering his condolences to her, the family, and all Nigerians mourning the loss.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who mourn him,” Tinubu added.
As part of national mourning, Tinubu has ordered all flags to be flown at half-mast across Nigeria for seven days starting Sunday. An emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council has also been convened for Tuesday, 15 July, to honour the late leader.
Furthermore, Tinubu announced that Buhari would be accorded full state honours in recognition of his “towering contributions” to the country.
Concluding his statement, Tinubu offered prayers: “May Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and may his life inspire future generations to serve Nigeria with courage and selflessness.”
