Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his effective oversight of infrastructure development, suggesting the opposition politician would be a welcome addition to the ruling party if he chose to cross over.
President Tinubu made the comments during the inauguration of the Arterial Road N16 in Katampe District on Wednesday, hailing the road’s completion within eight months as evidence of Wike’s leadership and capability.
“Wike may not yet be a member of our party,” said Tinubu, “but if he ever chooses to join us in the progressive fold, he will be received warmly. We’ll celebrate together.”
The President’s remarks signal a potential political realignment and reflect his ongoing appreciation for Wike’s contributions to federal infrastructure development, despite party differences.
He also used the occasion to underscore his administration’s dedication to public works. “Infrastructure is vital,” Tinubu said. “It forms the bedrock of economic opportunity and national development.”
The 8-month road project, completed under Wike’s watch, links key Abuja districts and is expected to enhance urban mobility and stimulate commerce.
In his remarks, Wike applauded President Tinubu’s support and dismissed critics who, he said, refused to acknowledge the administration’s achievements. “Some individuals will never be satisfied, no matter the progress. But for those who appreciate governance, this is a moment to celebrate,” Wike stated.
He also credited recent changes in government payment procedures with improving contractor confidence. “Gone are the days of delayed payments. Contractors now know that if they deliver, they’ll be compensated promptly,” he said.
Wike further claimed that the government’s development achievements had disrupted opposition efforts to form a united front ahead of the next elections. “Each day, they watch the progress on television—on Channels, NTA, TVC. It’s all Tinubu. They’re losing ground,” he said.
