President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Afam Osigwe (SAN), has enjoined organisations involved in charity events to prioritise safety measures.
Osigwe made the call in a statement to newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday, following the recent stampede in parts of the country, which reportedly claimed the lives of some people.
Some people were reportedly killed in stampede in parts of the country as large crowd gathered to collect food items distributed at annual Christmas events,
Osigwe expressed condolences on behalf of the bar to families of the deceased and underscored the need for adequate safety measures in future programmes.
“The NBA expresses its condolences to the family and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives in recent stampede in Anambra, Abuja, and Oyo States during the distribution of relief items.
“While death is a natural part of life, the loss of lives under such preventable circumstances is deeply painful and demands our collective reflection.
“These tragedies remind us of the critical need for adequate safety measures to avoid a recurrence,” he said
He noted that while the NBA commended the generousity of Nigerians who in this festive season, had chosen to share resources with the less-privileged, there is, however, the need for caution.
“We, strongly urge individuals and organisations engaging in charitable acts to prioritise the safety and well-being of beneficiaries by adopting the following measures.
“Organisers must implement effective crowd control strategies to prevent chaotic situation.
“These include designating orderly distribution points and ensuring systematic arrangements for receiving relief items.
“Involving law enforcement and safety personnel during such activities is essential to maintain law and order and prevent overcrowding.
“Public messaging on the importance of calmness and patience during relief distributions can significantly reduce the risks associated with large gatherings.
“Exploring safer and more efficient methods, such as digital transfers or staggered distribution schedules, can mitigate risks and ensure equitable access to aid,” Osigwe said.
The NBA president, therefore, called for safer celebrations during the festive season, saying that the life of every Nigerian was precious.
He noted that the NBA remained committed to advocating for measures that upheld the dignity of all Nigerians and prevent such unnecessary loss of life.
“We urge government agencies, private organisations and individuals to prioritise safety as they extend goodwill to others,” he said. (NAN)
