The Embassy of South Korea in Nigeria has joined the international community in mourning the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledging his pivotal role in advancing diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London hospital after a period of illness. His death was confirmed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and former aide, Bashir Ahmad.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the South Korean Embassy expressed its condolences to Buhari’s family and the Nigerian people.
“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” the embassy wrote. “His leadership helped shape Nigeria’s path and contributed to the growth of South Korea–Nigeria relations. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of Nigeria during this time of loss.”
The embassy highlighted that under Buhari’s administration, the two nations deepened cooperation across various sectors, including trade, energy, technology and education.
Notable joint initiatives included efforts to boost Nigeria’s industrial capacity and enhance human capital development, which helped lay the foundation for ongoing and future collaboration.
The embassy concluded by recognising Buhari’s presidency as a period of expanded diplomatic engagement and mutual understanding between South Korea and Nigeria.
