Vice-President Kashim Shettima has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as one of the most painful losses Nigeria has suffered in recent times.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday in Abuja, Shettima recalled his recent visit to Buhari in London, where the former president passed away at the age of 82 following a brief illness.
“It is a black Sunday in Nigeria! My heart is overwhelmed by grief, as the nation mourns one of its greatest leaders of all time,” Shettima said.
“This loss is too cruel than terms could give out – coming at a time I was anticipating his quick recovery.”
Shettima paid tribute to Buhari’s remarkable career, noting his service both as a military leader and as a democratically elected president decades later.
“Great leaders like the late Buhari are very rare to come by in a lifetime,” he said. “He dedicated his active years to serving Nigeria and the people.”
Shettima highlighted Buhari’s democratic credentials, commitment to national unity, and vision for a stronger Nigeria as key aspects of his legacy.
“Indeed, he lived a life that transcended the ordinary—a life of selflessness, bravery in the face of adversity, and integrity in public service,” the vice-president added.
He extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, and Nigerians nationwide, urging them to find comfort in the enduring impact of Buhari’s legacy.
