Mr Ronald Adams, Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), says Nigeria can achieve sustainable energy with the right policies and appropriate technologies.

Adams stressed the need for a strong supply chain and local human capacity to boost production and attract investment into the energy sector.

He made this known during a panel session at the annual international conference of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Section in Lagos on Wednesday.

He noted that sound policies form the backbone of sustainable energy, while technology can enable efficiency by unlocking more with less.

Efficient supply chains and a skilled workforce, he added, are essential for driving growth and ensuring a secure energy future for Nigeria.

According to him, the key question is not Nigeria’s role in future energy, but how fast and effectively it can deliver cleaner and affordable energy.

Adams reaffirmed Shell’s support for Nigeria’s energy transition, stating that SNEPCo is using predictive analytics and data systems to optimise performance on the Bonga facility.

He described the near 20-year performance on Bonga as a result of technology, foresight, and an enduring commitment to excellence.

Adams also said SNEPCo ensures over 90 per cent of contract value is executed by Nigerian firms, strengthening local contractors’ capacity in goods and services delivery.

However, he noted that more must be done to scale local competence in the sector.

He explained that limited industrial capacity in Nigeria often splits project scopes between local and overseas firms, raising costs and delaying execution.

To address this, Adams advocated investment in local fabrication centres, certification, standardisation, and access to capital for domestic vendors.

He urged continued reforms to create a stable and investor-friendly fiscal environment with reduced uncertainty.

“A sustainable energy future for Nigeria and Africa will not come by chance. It must be built deliberately, collectively, and with courage,” he said. (NAN)
