Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, has expressed concerns on the alarming rate of population growth in Nigeria, particularly in the North.
In a phone conversation with our correspondent, Masussuka lamented the indiscriminate giving birth to children without proper care, citing it as a significant contributor to poverty and societal problems.
Masussuka attributed the rise of bandits and terrorists in the country to lack of proper care and parenthood.
“What is the benefit of bearing children that will later turn into kidnappers or terrorists?” he questioned.
While emphasising the importance of responsible parenthood, he referenced the Quran’s guidelines on marriage, stating that only those who can cater to their families should consider polygamy.
To address the issue of unproductive population, Masussuka advocated for family planning measures.
He drew comparisons with China, a country with a productive population that restricts birth rates, “unlike Nigeria where many citizens are idle and uneducated”.
The cleric also suggested introducing skills training in school curricula to combat joblessness.
