Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their record-breaking seventh title victory at the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2025 tournament.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio described the team’s triumph as a reflection of the determination, strength, and talent of Nigerian women.
“It is heartwarming that within the space of two weeks, Nigeria has conquered Africa twice — feats made possible by the resilience and industry of our women,” Akpabio said.
He highlighted the achievements of both the Super Falcons, who advanced to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup, and the D’Tigress, who not only overcame Senegal in the semi-finals but went on to dominate Mali in the final of the continental basketball championship.
Akpabio praised the team for embodying the Nigerian spirit of discipline, determination, and excellence, noting that the D’Tigress’ seventh Afrobasket title — and their fifth consecutive championship — was a testament to their hard work and commitment.
“This historic victory reinforces our nation’s ethos of persistence and drive, especially when the odds appear daunting,” he said.
The Senate President also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attributing the growing success of Nigerian women in sport to the broader goals of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The achievements of our women confirm that Nigeria is on the path of greatness. I am confident that, with sustained support, we will continue to see more of such victories,” he said.
Akpabio extended his appreciation to the coaching staff and technical team of D’Tigress for their pivotal role in guiding the team to glory and inspiring a new generation of young girls in Nigeria to pursue careers in sport.
“Congratulations to President Tinubu, to our women, and especially to our queens — the D’Tigress — for making us proud once again,” he concluded.
