Sen Mukhail Abiru (APC, Lagos-East) has appealed to his constituents and Nigerians to support the tax reform initiative of President Bola Tinubu.

Abiru made the appeal at the distribution of combo food items to over 10,000 households in his constituency office in Ikorodu area of Lagos, to celebrate the yuletide.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that the food items, containing Rice (8kg) and Garri were distributed simultaneously in Ibeju-Lekki, Kosofe, Epe and Somolu areas of the zone.

The initiative which targeted both party and non-party members, especially the vulnerable, was part of Abiru’s efforts at alleviating the economic challenges faced by residents, particularly during the yuletide.

Abiru, the chairman, senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, also sensitised them on the tax reform, saying it was meant to bring succour as a pro-people and pro-growth initiative.

“We believe that this is the little we can do to support ourselves, support our constituents and also support the initiative of the President.

“We know that some of the bold and necessary reforms the President has embarked upon has immediate challenges and this initiative is one of the ways to bring succour to some of our constituents.

“Some people have talked about the tax reforms, as we welcome consultations that are required, it is also important that we study the reforms properly to understand it as a pro-people and pro-growth initiative,” he said.

The lawmaker said the reform would provide succour to people within the low income range, adding that people earning N800,000 and below would get additional M200, 000 to support rent and accommodation.

“People within that bracket will be exempted from paying tax, Vat too has been done with a lot of human face, It has given exemptions to issues around education, agriculture, transportation and health.

“The tax reform has also made provision for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs) to flourish and to encourage them because they form almost 60 to 65 per cent of employment in the country.

“Such initiative is meant to spur growth, and also make every environment in Nigeria to be competitive.

“I implore people to support the reform initiative of our President, and the leadership that we have.

“It is a life time opportunity that we must take advantage of,” he said.(NAN)
