Mr Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General (IG) of Police, on Wednesday said the combination of security, governance and citizen responsibilities were unmissable elements in the growth and development of the nation.

Egbetokun, while speaking as Guest Lecturer at the University of Ibadan 2024 Convocation Lecture in Ibadan, noted that citizen responsibilities would enhance good governance and security.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture was titled “Unlocking Progress: The Indispensable Trio of Security, Governance and Citizens Responsibilities”.

The Inspector-General added that if any of the trio was dispensed with the whole structure would collapse.

“The trio are indispensable for a nation’s growth.

“We continue to blame the leaders, whereas the leaders came from the society. If we have responsible citizens in the society there will be good governance and security,” he said.

Egbetokun urged Nigerians to change their attitude and work together with the country’s security agencies to fight insecurity in Nigeria for the country’s growth and development.

He said the collaborative relationship between governance, security and citizen’s responsibilities would create a solid foundation for a secure and prosperous society.

Egbetokun said the development and sustainability of the national security and good governance depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders.

The IG said government must ensure the rule of law, protect citizens’ rights and provide transparent and inclusive governance.

“Citizens must actively engage in upholding their responsibilities, promote social harmony and support law enforcement.

“Law enforcement plays a critical role in maintaining national security but their success is significantly enhanced by the active involvement and trust of citizens,” he said.

Egbetokun said President Bola Tinubu’s administration had taken some measures that would enhance the country’s security.

“This is by providing necessary equipment for the military and law enforcement agencies in tackling the country’s security challenges.”

He listed other measures taken by security agencies to include border patrol, community policing, international partnership and non-kinetic approach, among others, which would keep people away from crime.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, had said the convocation lecture was designed to provide strategic solution to the country’s security challenges.

Adebowale said the lecture would provide the full potential and policies that would drive the country’s economy growth and guide the citizens aright.

“Security is the responsibility of all and sundry,” he added.(NAN)
