The 16th Emir of Kano, Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on the federal government to urgently revive the United Nigeria Textiles Limited (UNTL), citing the loss of over 10,000 jobs and increased regional insecurity since the company ceased operations in 2022.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement in Kaduna, led by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Enoh, Sanusi highlighted key factors behind the firm’s collapse: poor power supply, textile smuggling, and weak enforcement of intellectual property laws. He warned that continued dormancy could worsen unemployment, particularly for youth and women.
In response, Senator Enoh reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to revitalising the textile, cotton, and garment industry, noting steps such as stakeholder consultations, public-private partnerships, and policies to boost local manufacturing and export competitiveness.
Enoh described the revival of UNTL as both symbolic and strategic, saying it would restore investor confidence and accelerate Nigeria’s industrial growth.
