The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on the Implementation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Policy,  says it will begin investigation into the implementation of the policy on Thursday,  July 31.

In a statement on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Usman Jaha (APC-Borno) the committee called for submission of memoranda from all stakeholders and the general public.

Jaha said  the move was in line with the powers granted under Sections 62, 88, and 89 of the Constitution and a resolution of the house, mandating the establishment of more CNG conversion centres nationwide.

The lawmaker explained that the committee’s mandate included reviewing the CNG policy implementation strategies, assessing safety protocols, financing mechanisms, investment opportunities, regulatory frameworks, and sustainability of the initiative in the context of national energy reform.

The lawmakers said the hearing will hold on Thursday, July 31, in Conference Room 231, House of Representatives Building, National Assembly Complex at 1.p.m

Jaha said the committee had invited relevant agencies of government, private sector stakeholders, investors, energy experts, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the general public to participate by submitting memoranda and attending the session.

“All submissions are to be made at the Committee Secretariat, Room 303, 3rd Floor, White House, national assembly Complex.

“For inquiries, stakeholders are encouraged to contact the Clerk of the committee via 0703 038 3400.

“The hearing is expected to address the pace of implementation of the shift to CNG as an affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative to petrol, following the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023,” he said.

He said that the CNG initiative is a core component of the current administration’s post-subsidy fuel reform agenda.

The legislator explained that it was aimed at reducing fuel costs for Nigerians, stimulating domestic gas utilisation, and attracting private investments into Nigeria’s gas value chain.

Jaha reiterated the committee’s commitment to ensuring accountability, transparency, and efficiency in national energy transition efforts. (NAN)
