A severe rainstorm has caused widespread destruction across several schools and staff accommodations in the Funtua zone of Katsina State, according to government officials.
Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, Katsina State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, confirmed the damage in a statement issued on Tuesday through the ministry’s spokesperson, Malam Sani Danjuma.
The storm, which struck earlier this week, severely damaged educational facilities and teachers’ residences, disrupting operations at multiple institutions in the region.
“The ministry extends heartfelt sympathies to all staff, students, and their families affected by this natural disaster,” said Musa-Musawa. “We pray for divine relief for those impacted and wish to reassure them of our unwavering support during this difficult period.”
Despite the damage, the commissioner encouraged school managements to continue academic activities to ensure minimal disruption to learning. She stressed the importance of maintaining student attendance and safeguarding the educational calendar.
She also noted that the ministry is currently carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the destruction and will announce further steps to support recovery and repairs.
The incident adds to the growing challenges facing educational infrastructure in the northern part of Nigeria, where extreme weather events are increasingly frequent.
