Ahead of the Saturday local government election in Benue, the Police Command in the state has assured residents of adequate security during the polls.
This was contained in a press statement on Wednesday signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Sewuese Anene and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdo on Wednesday.
Anene said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Steve Yabanet has ordered the deployment of officers across the 23 Local Government Areas ahead of the Oct. 5 polls.
“The CP has charged all Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure that their areas of responsibilities are properly secured,” the command’s spokesperson said.
He said further that the CP charged all officers posted to polling units, collation centres and all other points during the election to be professional and civil in carrying out their duties.
“Other security agents that shall be participating in the election security process have also been warned to be professional.
“There shall be restriction of movement within the state from 12:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. on Oct. 5, 2024.
“This is to enable a firm control of various routes and persons that could hinder a smooth running of the electoral process.
“Only officials on essential/ emergency duties and duly identified shall be allowed access.
“No form of violence, intimidation, vote buying or other electoral offences will be tolerated.
“Parents, guardians, traditional leaders, religious leaders, political party leaders and other stakeholders are by this notice advised to warn their children and wards against such practices as the police will take decisive legal actions against such persons,”the CP was quoted as saying.
He assured the good people of Benue state of his commitment to ensure a secured atmosphere for elections.
“Electorates are encouraged to go out and exercise their franchise without any fear of harassment or intimidation as adequate security has been emplaced,” Yabanet said. (NAN)
