Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has congratulated Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumphant victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The Nigerian side clinched their seventh continental title on Sunday night with an emphatic 78–64 win over Mali in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Obi hailed the team’s spirited performance, describing them as “fearless, fast, and unstoppable – true queens of the court.”
“Congratulations D’Tigress, you did it! You played like true queens of the court – fearless, fast, and unstoppable,” Obi wrote. “Once again, you’ve made Nigeria proud, made Africa proud, and made history by becoming AfroBasket champions five times in a row.”
He praised the players for their dedication and sporting excellence, highlighting their commitment to showcasing Nigerian talent on a global stage.
“To the players – thank you for giving us your absolute best, for pouring your heart into every game, and for showing the world what Nigerian excellence looks like. Your prowess on the court was exceptional.”
Obi also commended Coach Rena Wakama, whose leadership and tactical acumen have drawn widespread acclaim since taking the helm of the national side.
“To Coach Rena Wakama – thank you for your leadership, strategy, and belief in this team. You guided them like a true champion maker.”
The victory cements D’Tigress’s dominance in African women’s basketball, marking their seventh overall title and fifth consecutive championship win – a feat unmatched in the history of the competition.
