Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reaffirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary during its milestone 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held in Abuja on Monday.
Speaking to journalists after the session, the PDP’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, announced that the next NEC meeting has been scheduled for 23 July. “This meeting had a single agenda: to discuss our interaction with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the office of the national secretary,” Damagum said. “We agreed that Sen. Anyanwu will continue to act as national secretary, and the next NEC will address the issue of our national convention.”
Damagum pushed back against speculation that the gathering would deepen divisions within the party, insisting that the PDP remains united and resilient. “All our governors were present, and the entire National Working Committee (NWC) is aligned. You won’t see those conflicting press statements anymore,” he noted.
In his opening remarks, Damagum also urged members to stop “de-marketing” the party publicly. “If you love this party, devote your energy to promoting its strengths,” he warned.
Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, reinforced the message, declaring: “PDP will never die.” He praised the leadership for closing ranks, while cautioning against fresh attempts by detractors to sow discord.
Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, described the successful NEC meeting as a testament to the PDP’s resilience. “The NWC has resolved all internal disagreements. There’s no more excuse for parallel meetings,” he asserted.
Other high-profile attendees included governors from Oyo, Zamfara, Plateau, Adamawa, and Bayelsa states; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; and senior party figures such as Prof. Jerry Gana, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, and Chief Bode George.
The party leadership concluded by reaffirming its commitment to internal unity and to preparing for its upcoming convention.
