The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened the voter registration process for citizens who have recently turned 18, giving them the opportunity to participate in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Awka, Anambra Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, described the move as timely, noting it would enable wider participation of young voters in the 8 November election.
Mefor highlighted that this step demonstrates INEC’s commitment to strengthening democracy and encouraging active involvement of young people in Nigeria’s electoral process.
He urged all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to take part in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which began nationwide on Tuesday, 8 July and will end on 17 July.
“The exercise offers those who have recently turned 18 the chance to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and have a say in choosing their leaders,” Mefor explained.
In addition, the commissioner clarified that citizens who have moved to Anambra and wish to transfer their voting rights, as well as those needing replacements for lost or damaged voter cards, may also use this period to update their details.
Mefor called on residents to complete the registration process at designated centres and to avoid double registration, stressing that this collective effort would help ensure free, fair and credible elections across the country.
