Gov Ahmed Ododo of Kogi has flagged off disbursement of N100,000 each to 8,000 youths and women in the state, as Livelihood Support Grant for their existing and new businesses.
Ododo disbursed the grant to the beneficiaries from all the 21 local government areas of the state on Thursday in Lokoja.
He said the disbursement of the cash marked a significant milestone in the lives of the women and youths of the state, towards a more equitable and prosperous livelihood.
The governor who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Joel Oyibo, said that the empowerment was in collaboration with the World Bank under the Kogi State Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (KG-CARES).
He said the livelihood support grants through the state grant transfer delivery platform was designed to provide cushioning effect for the vulnerable individuals and households.
“This transfer cannot be equated by the amount, but the various value possibilities that it would add to the beneficiaries- enabling them to meet their basic needs, invest in their education, health and participate fully in the economic vibrancy of the state.
“I believe that the programme will have transformative impact in our communities, increase school enrollment, health condition, reduce child labour, empower women small scale business and pressing family needs,” he said.
The governor urged all the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity, consider it as a critical step towards enhancing the dignity of life and that of their loved ones as they put the money to good use.
“I also appeal to all stakeholders and the general public to work with this administration in order to make Kogi a state where everyone has the opportunity to strive as we build a future without poverty and all citizens can live with dignity and hope.
Earlier, Mrs Aisha Omade, the State Coordinator/CEO Kogi State Social Investment Programme Agency, said that the agency had ensured inclusivity of all citizens across the 21 LGA of the state.
Omade noted that inclusivity was critical for development to thrive, adding that she had withdrawn the beneficiaries from getting soft loans from LAPO Microfinance bank.
Also, Mr Kehinde Olorunmosunle, the Head of Delivery Platform State Cash Transfer Unit, said the empowerment programme had laid a foundation by giving youths and women the opportunity to afford the knowledge and required skills for more promising future.
Mrs Mosunmola Ahinde, one of the beneficiaries, said that the empowerment would go a long way to transform her life and that of her loved ones.
Also, Mr Caleb Ojochegbe, said the cash benefit would boost his petty business and enhance his economic fortune.(NAN)
