Gov Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, says the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has solutions to Nigeria’s unemployment problem.
Eno made the statement at the closing ceremony for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members orientation course at Nsit Atai on Tuesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that SAED is an NYSC programme aimed at equipping corps members with essential skills and resources for successful entrepreneurship.
The programme also aims to instil the culture of self-reliance and sustainable job creation on the youths during the service year.
Represented by Mrs Rose Bassey, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Eno said that unemployment would be reduced if youths acquired entrepreneurial skills during national service.
“It will help the nation to reduce its reliance on white-collar jobs, this step will also stimulate economic growth,” he said.
The governor urged corps members to leverage the skills received from the scheme to train people in their host communities.
“The skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme of the scheme is the right way to go, it has the solution to the country’s unemployment problem.
“Through it, we can train our people and make them believe in themselves, this is because there is dignity in labour,” he said.
He assured the corps members of safety in their places of primary assignment, and urged them to be of good behaviour during the service year.
The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr Christopher Okuns, cautioned the youths on acts capable of portraying the scheme in bad light.
Represented by Mrs Chinwe Nnegha, Okuns urged the corps members to leave indelible imprints in their places of primary assignment.(NAN)
