Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Tuesday received the Torch of Unity of the National Sports Festival (NSF), promising his commitment to youth and sports development.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports in Ibadan that the sports festival, tagged “Gateway 2025,” and hosted by Ogun, commences on Wednesday.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Mr Bayo Lawal, received the torch from the representative of the National Sports Council, Mrs Ekeana Ibora.
Makinde maintained that his administration would remain steadfast in its commitment to supporting youth and sports development at all levels, as they were held dearly.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to the provision of adequate infrastructure, training facilities, and a conducive environment for youth development in the state.
The governor stressed that his government would continue to promote youth engagement and healthy competition through sports.
“Receiving the Torch of Unity in Oyo State is an honour and a reaffirmation of the collective commitment to national cohesion and shared progress.
“The Torch of Unity is more than a ceremonial emblem, it is a powerful symbol of peace, unity and brotherhood across the 36 states of the federation,” he said.
Makinde encouraged the Oyo State athletes to be exemplary representatives of the state, upholding the values of sportsmanship and integrity on and off the field of play.
He promised that the state government would recognise and reward athletes and officials who bring honour to the state.
