The Anambra female volleyball team has ended their quest for a medal at the ongoing 2nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun.
The hard fighting Anambra ladies lost 0-3 to the superior power of Rivers girls in the quarter finals at the Aleke Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
The exciting game ended 25-14, 26-24, 25-8 in favour of Rivers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the end of Day-10, Anambra won a total of 14 medals comprising one gold, six silver and seven bronze.
Speaking after the loss, some of the players decried their exist, saying that they came with the ultimate prize in mind.
Ogechukwu Nwankwo, a star player in the team, said the loss was painful.
Nwankwo said the team gave their best but it was not good enough to see them beyond the quarter finals.
“We came to win and we did our best but we lost out.
“We give thanks to God, volleyball is a beautiful game, I will continue to play it as long as the opportunity presents itself,” she said.
Also speaking, Chidimma Ezechukwu, said that the loss was emotional for them.
“We actually had the gold in mind but unfortunately we are out, we will go and prepare better for the next festival,” she said .
NAN reports that Rivers will square up against Oyo and Ogun against Kaduna in the semi finals stage.
In other events, Arinze Maduekwe advanced to the quarter finals of the deaf table tennis after beating his opponent from Lagos 3-1, while Okwuoma Ugwumadu crashed out in the round of 16 after losing 2-3 to Delta.(NAN)
