The Northern States Governors’ Forum has strongly condemned the brutal killing of travellers journeying from Kaduna State to Plateau State, describing the attack as a despicable act of violence that must not go unpunished.
In a statement released on Sunday by Ismail Uba-Misilli, spokesperson to Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State—who also chairs the Forum—Yahaya expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives in the incident, which occurred in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“This is a barbaric and cowardly act that has no place in any civilised society,” Yahaya said. “Such senseless violence against unarmed civilians is unacceptable and must be confronted with swift and decisive justice.”
The victims were reportedly travelling to attend a wedding ceremony when they were ambushed and murdered on Friday in an attack that has shocked the nation.
Governor Yahaya extended condolences to the people and government of Kaduna State, especially to the bereaved families, and offered prayers for the souls of the deceased.
He also commended the Plateau State authorities and security forces for their prompt intervention and arrest of suspects linked to the killings, urging a thorough investigation and speedy prosecution of those responsible.
“This is not merely about bringing criminals to book,” he added. “It is about reaffirming the rule of law and ensuring the safety and dignity of every Nigerian citizen.”
The Forum Chairman appealed for calm among residents of Plateau, Kaduna, and neighbouring states, urging citizens to avoid reprisals and allow justice to take its course.
“We must not allow the actions of a few to tear apart the bonds that unite our communities,” he said.
Yahaya reaffirmed the Forum’s commitment to regional cooperation on security, pledging to work collectively to address the root causes of violence and promote peace across Northern Nigeria.
