The Federal Government has expressed its readiness to deepen bilateral trade ties between Nigeria and Kuwait.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, made this known in Kuwait during a working visit to the country designed to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties between both countries.
Tuggar, in a statement issued by Alkasim Abdulkadir, his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, on Wednesday, said the visit also aimed to advance trade and agricultural cooperation.
“The visit, which runs from Feb. 5 to 8, 2025 marks the first time a Nigerian foreign minister visited Kuwait since the establishment of diplomatic relations on Jan. 31, 1970.
“During the visit, there will be strategic engagement with his Kuwait counterpart, Amb. Abdullah Al-Yahya, and the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).”
He also said the visit would feature a high-level dialogue with Sheikh Ahmed Al-Sabah, Prime Minister of Kuwait; a courtesy visit to Sheikh Mishal Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait; and a formal agreement to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Such agreement would include the establishment of a joint commission for mutual cooperation, and a framework for bilateral consultations to strengthen diplomatic engagements between both countries’ foreign ministries.
Others include, capacity building and diplomatic expertise exchange, economic, trade, investment, science and technology, and agricultural cooperation agreements.
The visit is also expected to feature meetings with Kuwait’s Minister of Petroleum, Tariq Al-Roumi Waleed Al-Bahar, Director-General, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), and business lunch by Kuwaiti authorities, leading business figures and investors.
“This visit is expected to strengthen diplomatic, economic and investment ties between Nigeria and Kuwait, and open new avenues for cooperation across multiple sectors,” Tuggar said. (NAN)
