Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Environment has warned of possible flooding in 15 northern states between 10 and 14 August 2025, citing forecasts of heavy rainfall.
The alert, issued through the National Flood Early Warning Centre, names Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina and Kebbi as among the highest-risk states. Other states on red alert include Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno and Kwara.
Prominent towns placed on the watchlist include Jimeta, Mubi, Keffi, Kafanchan, Birnin Kebbi, Minna, Gusau and Sokoto. Kebbi State has the largest number of towns at risk, with 10 locations listed, including Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu, Jega and Birnin Kebbi.
Malam Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the ministry’s Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, urged residents and state agencies to take urgent measures to protect lives and property. He also called for swift feedback from stakeholders to enable a coordinated response to any incidents.
The ministry had previously issued a similar warning last month to 11 states, advising early preparation to mitigate flood risks.
