Nigerian security forces have been deployed in large numbers to border communities in Nasarawa State following a deadly attack that claimed over 200 lives in the Telewata area of neighbouring Benue State, authorities confirmed.
The assault, which occurred on Saturday in Guma Local Government Area, has triggered widespread fear and a wave of displacement, with hundreds fleeing villages such as Telewata to seek refuge in Nasarawa. Tensions remain high in the border regions.
In response, security operatives were stationed at critical points across border communities, particularly in Keana and Doma Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State. The deployment is aimed at preventing a spillover of violence and safeguarding residents.
Just a day prior to the Telewata massacre, unidentified gunmen attacked Doka and Antsa villages in Doma and Keana LGAs respectively, forcing over 1,000 residents to flee.
Speaking to Newsmen Superintendent Ramhan Nansel, spokesperson for the Nasarawa Police Command, said the State Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, had personally led a security delegation to the border region immediately after the incident.
“The Commissioner, alongside other security heads, ensured the rapid deployment of mobile police units and tactical teams to vulnerable points,” Nansel stated.
He added that the officials engaged directly with local communities to encourage vigilance while assuring them that their safety was a priority.
“There will be a continuous security presence in collaboration with sister agencies. We are alert and fully prepared to respond to any threat. Residents are advised to remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic,” Nansel concluded.
