The Niger Delta Students’ Union Government (NIDSUG) has issued a stern warning to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), threatening mass protest over the alleged harassment of its members by security personnel stationed at the Commission.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, NIDSUG President, Comrade Scott Ogunseri, condemned the incident and gave the NDDC a seven-day ultimatum to arrange a formal meeting with student leaders.
Ogunseri said:
“The leadership of NIDSUG expresses deep shock and strong condemnation over the shameful and inhumane treatment of our members at the gate of the NDDC on Tuesday, May 29, 2025.
Students who came in peace to voice their legitimate frustrations over years of neglect by the Commission were unjustly harassed, assaulted, and brutalized by unidentified individuals.
This is an unacceptable violation of the rights of Niger Delta students and a direct insult to their dignity.”
He added that the incident nearly sparked a region-wide mobilization of students who were ready to storm the Commission’s headquarters in protest. However, swift intervention by NIDSUG’s Life Members and Elders Council prevented the situation from escalating.
“After a high-level emergency stakeholders’ meeting,” Ogunseri continued, “we have decided to issue a seven-day ultimatum to the NDDC. We expect the Commission to open lines of dialogue and resolve this matter amicably.”
NIDSUG reiterated that failure to engage within the specified timeframe could result in mass demonstrations across the region.
