A Magistrates’ Court in Ota, Ogun State, on Wednesday sentenced a 38-year-old self-acclaimed Muslim prophet, Azeez Aboderin, to two years in prison for fraudulently obtaining N2.2 million from a woman under false pretence.
Aboderin, whose address was not disclosed, was charged with fraud and obtaining money under false pretence. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Mrs. O.O. Fadairo found the accused guilty and sentenced him to two years imprisonment, with an option of a N200,000 fine. The court also ordered Aboderin to restitute the full N2.2 million to the complainant, Oyeniyi Mariam.
The Prosecuting Counsel, ASP E.O. Adaraloye, told the court that the offence took place between January and July 2025 at the Iyana-Iyesi area of Ota.
He explained that the convict fraudulently collected the sum from the complainant under the guise of offering spiritual assistance for an undisclosed personal problem but later converted the funds for personal use.
Adaraloye said the offences violated Sections 390 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Magistrate Fadairo ruled that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, warranting the conviction and sentencing.
