Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a towering figure whose dedication to national service and integrity will be remembered for generations.
The tribute was conveyed by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, in a condolence letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the Buhari family, and the nation on Monday in Abuja.
Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at a clinic in London, served Nigeria in both military and civilian roles, including as Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
“From his military leadership to his two-term presidency, Buhari remained a symbol of discipline, unity, and unwavering national commitment,” Matawalle wrote. “His steadfast belief in a united and indivisible Nigeria inspired generations. He will be remembered as a leader who always placed the country above personal interest.”
The minister concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul and asking Allah to grant him Aljanatul Firdaus.
Since news of Buhari’s passing, tributes have poured in from across Nigeria and beyond, highlighting his lasting influence on the country’s political, security and governance landscape.
