A 50-year-old man, Monsuru Alarape, was on Friday arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court in Osun over an alleged defamation and threat to life.
Alarape is facing a three-count charge bordering on threat to kill, defamation and breach of public peace.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp Anifowose Saheed, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in January before he was arrested and brought to court.
Saheed said that the defendant went to a radio station to defame the characters of the Nigeria Police Force and also threatened to kill one Safiatu Orolade.
He said that the defendant lied against the Zone XI Police Command in Osun on allegations known to be fake, before he was tracked and arrested.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provision of Sections 375, 249(D) and 86 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences preferred against him.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Najite Okobie, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. Odeleye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum.
Odeleye said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, with evidence of tax payment and passport photographs attached, as well as an affidavit of means.
He, thereafter, adjourned the case till April 13 for hearing. (NAN)
