Gov Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged new corps members in the state to pay special attention to the development of their host communities.

The governor made the call on Tuesday in Iseyin during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream ‘I’ Orientation Course of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He charged the corps members to identify viable projects that would positively impact on people’s lives.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor was represented by Mrs Kudirat Mustapha, Director of Youth Development, state Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Makinde charged the corps members to focus on the lessons and skills acquired during orientation course and apply them for the improvement of the society during the service year and beyond.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the various skills you acquired would be of great value to you in your life’s journey.

“May I equally remind you that as patriots in service, you must all join hands to build a stronger, more united, peaceful and democratic nation.

“Therefore, it is imperative that you do not isolate yourself from the overall objective of the founding fathers of the scheme. Let the motto of NYSC which is “Service and Humility” be your guiding principle,” he said.

The governor assured that his government would not relent in its efforts at addressing corps members welfare and ensuring adequate safety at their various places of assignments.

“I enjoin you to be diligent, dedicated and law abiding in the discharge of your duties.

“Shun truancy and other forms of anti-social behaviours such as cultism, drug abuse, internet scam and the likes,” he said.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Abel Odoba, noted that the corps members have been equipped with knowledge, discipline, and mindset needed to contribute meaningfully to their host communities and the nation at large.

He urged them to allow core values of selfless service; patriotism, discipline, and teamwork continue to guide their service year journey.

“Your success in this service year depends largely on your character, attitude, and willingness to serve.

“Avoid unathorised travels, and embrace every opportunity for personal and professional growth.

“I implore you to enhance your academic qualifications by acquiring practical skills that will serve you beyond the service year,” Odoba said.(NAN)
