Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s former Minister of Information and Culture, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as more than just a leader, but also a mentor, source of strength, and father figure.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Mohammed called Buhari’s passing a personal loss, reflecting on the close relationship they shared during and after their years in government.
“Many have rightly celebrated him as a rare patriot, a man of unwavering integrity and character, an incorruptible leader and humble statesman,” Mohammed noted. “But beyond those tributes, President Buhari was a true humanist who always showed empathy and compassion, consistently putting others’ well-being first.”
The former minister, who served as the administration’s spokesman for nearly eight years, recounted how Buhari frequently checked on his welfare despite the president himself bearing far greater burdens.
“The trust and confidence he placed in me gave me strength during difficult times. In his eyes, I could do no wrong, and that unwavering support meant everything,” Mohammed said.
He added that their bond extended beyond their official roles, sharing that Buhari continued to stay in touch after leaving office. Mohammed fondly recalled his last visit to Buhari in Daura, where he spent three nights, and their final meeting during Ramadan in Kaduna.
“Though I was told he usually did not see visitors on that day, he still made time for me. We spent hours together—just the two of us. Little did I know it would be our last meeting in this life,” he reflected.
Mohammed shared that he continued to check on Buhari’s health through aides while praying for his recovery during his final illness in London.
“It was truly a privilege to have known and worked with him. I pray that Almighty God grants him Aljannah Firdaus and comforts his family and all Nigerians mourning this remarkable man,” he concluded.
