Labour unions at the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) in Okitipupa, Ondo State, have ended their 14-day warning strike after reaching an agreement with the state government on some of their demands.
The strike, which began on 20 June, was launched following directives from the Joint Action Congress (JAC) of Ondo State Tertiary Institutions (ODSTI) over issues including unpaid allowances.
The unions involved were the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
Mr Bobola Bamigbola, chairman of JAC at OAUSTECH, confirmed on Wednesday that staff had returned to their posts. “The unions have resumed work,” he said, adding that the state government had agreed to pay the outstanding subvention from January 2017 and five out of six months of a promised wage award. Authorities also pledged to address three other unresolved grievances.
The unions’ demands include the implementation of the national minimum wage, payment of wage award arrears, improved funding for higher institutions, and settlement of gratuities for retired staff.
