A splinter group within Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has announced plans to form a political alliance aimed at ending the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a stakeholder meeting in Katsina on Sunday, the group’s leader, Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa, said consultations were underway to establish a new political platform capable of mounting a credible national challenge. Inuwa, a former Secretary to the State Government and a former APC gubernatorial aspirant, said the move stemmed from widespread dissatisfaction with both major parties.
“The objective is clear — to present Nigerians with a strong, united, and trustworthy alternative to the APC,” he said. “We’re working with political figures across the country, and by the end of June, we hope to formally unveil this new coalition.”
He urged loyal supporters to remain patient and committed while the national leadership finalises the framework for this realignment. Inuwa further invited politically active Nigerians from all backgrounds to join the movement in what he described as a collective mission to reform governance.
Addressing questions about recent defections to the APC, he dismissed such moves as counterproductive, comparing them to “jumping from the frying pan into the fire.” He criticised both parties for persistent internal disputes, particularly during internal elections.
Inuwa also condemned recent local government elections in Katsina, alleging that nomination forms were selectively distributed to candidates endorsed by the state administration, undermining the democratic process.
He concluded with a rallying call to the electorate: “The people remain our focus. With their continued support and divine guidance, we believe success is within reach.”
