The Rule of Law Development Foundation (ROLDF), an NGO, has urged government at all levels to ensure that all petroleum tankers complied with the highest safety standards.

This is contained in a condolence letter to Gov. Umar Namadi and signed by its Co-Ordinator, Joseph Daudu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday.

The letter followed the death of no fewer than 153 people in a petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa.

The explosion occurred on October 15 when a tanker en route Nguru, Yobe State from Kano, overturned near Khadija University, Majia.

Daudu said the compliance should include regular maintenance and adherence to speed limits, adding that this would go a long way in reducing the carnage associated with tanker accidents in the country.

He also called for the implementation of a comprehensive training programmes for tanker drivers to enhance their skills in handling emergencies and navigating challenging road conditions.

Daudu, also popularly known as J.B Daudu in Nigeria’s legal circle in the letter advocated nationwide campaign on the dangers of collecting fuel from accident scenes involving tankers.

While praising the quick response of emergency services, he urged the government to strengthen emergency response capabilities by equipping local agencies with the necessary tools and training for swift response.

He highlighted the importance of revisiting safety protocols regarding the transportation of hazardous materials like petroleum, calling for a renewed focus on preventing such tragedies in the future.

He expressed profound sorrow for the lives lost in the accident and emphasised solidarity with the government and people of Jigawa.

“We at the Rule of Law Development Foundation (ROLDF) are deeply saddened by the news of the horrific petroleum tanker explosion.

“It resulted in the unfortunate loss of lives and injury to many in Jigawa State,” Daudu said.

He said the Foundation was ready to to collaborate with relevant authorities to minimise future incidents.

“As we mourn this great loss, it is vital that we, as a nation, remain united in addressing such incidents to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of our citizens”, he said.

Among other Nigerians President Bola Tinubu has also expressed his heartfelt condolences.

He said the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families, called for a review of fuel transportation safety protocols, and directed the immediate deployment of NEMA resources to provide aid. (NAN)
