The minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed profound sorrow over the sudden death of Dr. Leon Habby Usigbe, the Abuja Bureau Chief of Tribune Newspaper, describing it as a monumental loss to the Nigerian media and the nation at large.
In a condolence message issued on Saturday, Idris paid glowing tribute to Dr. Usigbe, hailing him as an “outstanding journalist” and “a shining light within the Nigerian media landscape,” whose work was marked by “integrity, depth, and an unflinching determination to the public good.”
“Dr. Usigbe was a pen-wielding advocate for democracy and national development,” the Minister said. “He brought intellectual rigour, insight, and balance to his reporting. In him, the Fourth Estate had a true patriot who used his craft to foster accountability and nation-building.”
Recalling the journalist’s incisive presence at official press engagements, particularly during Ministerial Press Briefing Sessions in Abuja and at the Presidential Villa, Idris noted that Dr. Usigbe’s contributions “consistently elevated the quality of discourse” and “helped bridge the gap between government and the media — all in service of a more informed and engaged society.”
The Minister described the late journalist as “one of Nigeria’s finest media minds,” adding that his “intellect, courage, and clarity of purpose earned him the respect of colleagues, government officials, and the public alike.”
On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Idris extended condolences to the management and staff of Tribune Newspaper, the government and people of Edo State — where Dr. Usigbe hailed from — as well as to his family, friends, and professional associates.
“May God Almighty comfort all those he has left behind and grant them the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” the Minister said. “May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
