As preparations intensify for the commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) on August 18, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned against multiple, proxy, and underage registrations in Kebbi State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kebbi, Alhaji Abubakar Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo, issued the warning on Wednesday during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi.
“INEC will not condone multiple registrations, registration by proxy, underage registration, or any other illegal form of getting registered,” Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo stated.
He explained that online pre-registration for eligible voters would begin on August 18, while in-person registration at INEC offices across the state would commence on August 25.
“Nigerians who have turned 18 are now eligible to register either through the online portal or by presenting themselves at our Local Government Area offices,” he added.
The REC also noted that the CVR exercise would cater to individuals who lost or misplaced their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), those whose cards have been damaged, and those who have relocated and wish to update their details.
“Persons whose voter cards are defaced, or who wish to correct personal details such as names or date of birth, can also visit our area offices for assistance,” he said.
According to him, the exercise will hold from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, excluding weekends and public holidays, at all INEC Area Offices across Kebbi State.
Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo disclosed that prior to the 2023 general elections, INEC registered a total of 2,032,041 eligible voters in the state.
“Of this number, 1,096,449 (54%) are male, while 935,592 (46%) are female,” he said.
He further revealed that Kebbi has 225 Registration Areas (RAs) and 3,743 Polling Units, with three senatorial districts and nine federal constituencies.
“As of the 2023 elections, 1,847,752 PVCs had been collected, representing a 97% collection rate. While only a negligible number of cards remain uncollected in our offices, we encourage their owners to come forward and claim them once the collection window reopens,” the REC added.
Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo urged all eligible voters to take advantage of the registration exercise and ensure that their details are accurately captured in the voter register.
