The Cross River State chapter of Ọhanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has pledged to become more politically active at both state and national levels, as the group seeks to secure greater representation and benefits for its members.
This commitment was made on Sunday in Ikom Local Government Area during the inauguration of newly elected executives who will lead the socio-cultural organisation for the next four years.
In his acceptance speech, the new chapter President, Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu, declared that the Igbo community in Cross River would no longer remain passive in political discourse or decision-making.
“This marks a new dawn for Ọhanaeze Ndigbo in Cross River. Going forward, we will no longer sit on the sidelines. From the 2027 general elections, we intend to be fully involved in shaping who governs us,” Egwuonwu said.
Promising inclusive leadership, Egwuonwu vowed to steer the organisation with integrity, transparency and unity. “We must work in synergy with the government, because in this part of the world, progress cannot be achieved in isolation,” he added.
In a show of support, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, represented by his Special Adviser on Non-Indigene Affairs, Chief Okey Maduekwe, praised the peaceful and credible nature of the election.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equitable treatment for all residents, regardless of ethnic or religious background. “My ‘people-first’ approach has benefitted all communities, and Igbos in Cross River continue to play a vital role in the economic and social fabric of the state,” he noted.
The governor acknowledged the Igbo community’s contributions to local commerce and said he was encouraged by the growing interest of Igbo investors in the state.
The election was conducted using a delegate system involving representatives from the 15 Ọhanaeze chapters across Cross River’s 18 local councils. Before voting commenced, the traditional leader of the Igbo community in the state, Ezeigbo Emmanuel Ezenwenyi—represented by Chief Livinus Ihezie—called for a peaceful and credible process.
