The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is strengthening ties with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to enhance data security and combat corruption.
ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare, in a statement on Monday, said the initiative was discussed when NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, paid a courtesy visit to ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Aliyu, SAN, in Abuja.
Represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Mr Clifford Oparaodu, Aliyu said the partnership will help enforce the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, closing loopholes exploited for fraud, identity theft, and other corrupt practices.
“Securing and managing data boosts efficiency, strengthens operations, and shrinks opportunities for corruption and abuse,” Aliyu stated, adding that a joint approach would enhance public trust and align Nigeria’s governance with global transparency standards.
Olatunji described the collaboration as a “critical enforcement tool,” saying it will focus on intelligence sharing on data breaches linked to corruption, joint awareness campaigns, and standardised data management protocols for public and private institutions.
The move follows ICPC’s recent capacity-building workshop for its Data Protection and Incident Response Team to improve data handling, tighten security, and ensure timely responses to breaches.
Both agencies plan to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding in the coming weeks.
